Did your doctor’s office require the AFP (Alpha-fetoprotein) test?

I was under the care of one office that gave me the choice. The next office I went to said it was mandatory... I continue to question my rights as a pregnant woman and don’t believe they can require me to take this test.

Reccomended for me, but it was covered under insurance and was a quick and easy blood test so i didn't see the big deal 🤷‍♀️

My high risk doctor said I could have it if I wanted, but that based off my ultrasounds she didn't see a reason to. I'm high risk because my boyfriend has Spina bifida.

It can also be a marker for Down Syndrome and other neural tube defects in addition to spina bifida. It detects the processing of protein in the liver. 
I switched practices for a more natural...patient centered office and at this office, there are mainly midwives. 
I was shocked when she said it was mandatory and I am conflicted.

Its optional at my office because they check the spine during your anatomy scan anyway. I have spinal bifida in my family BUT I've been taking extra folic acid for years. I did not do the test. My anatomy scan was yesterday and his spine is perfect. My doctor left it up to me. I would fight it if I were you.

It’s for spina bifida. They generally ask you if you want it done but strongly recommend it. If you’re past a certain age it’s strongly recommended
