Do I have a reason to be upset?

I know, I know, male obgyns are just doing their job. It isn't that I feel like they are more prone to be inappropriate or anything of the sort but I just personally feel more comfortable with a female doctor doing my paps or exams..when picking my ob for my pregnancy I specified I wanted a female dr. They informed me that there are 4 drs in rotation at the office and I'd see each of them at least once. Ok...so my 2nd appointment at 10 weeks pregnant..I wasn't informed of any paps or vaginal exams prior. Nurse does her thing and says oh by the way, even though your up to date on your pap they didn't do an hpv test so dr will need to do a pap today...this is my first appointment with the male dr, I wasn't expecting a pap or vaginal exam of any sort. I asked if I could do it at my following appointment with the female doc and was told no it had to be done that day. I was so taken back and felt so uncomfortable. Is this ok!? Am I over reacting?

you can ALWAYS and i repeat ALWAYS refuse treatment in any circumstances. if i were you, since these doctors are on rotation, get in the know about these laws, so that you have something to back you up when this situation arises again. it’s always up to you about what you’re comfortable with and what you’re not comfortable with, you don’t even need a reason for it. that’s your RIGHT. you can always always always refuse treatment. it’s the law.

That is very wrong. You need to bring this up woth the hospital's HR team. They cannot force you to receive a test or treatment against your will. And they cannot force you to have a male doctor doing internal exams if you are not comfortable with that.As someone who has been a victim of sexual assault and now suffers from PTSD and anxiety, I would have been having a panic attack if that happened. It is not acceptable and truly needs to be addressed. Please go report this bullshit!

Yep what these other ladies said! You ALWAYS have the right to decline any test, exam, medication, or treatment of ANY KIND. It doesn’t matter your reasoning and they may ask but you don’t have to give them your justifications. Everything done with YOUR BODY is 100% up to you!

Did you go through with the pap? You should always refuse treatment if you’re uncomfortable for *any* reason and that includes being seen by a male Dr. Anyone who works there should be more than understanding to you and I’m sorry that it doesn’t seem like they were. If you can I would switch facilities at that point, especially if they aren’t accommodating.

I would think that’s your right if you wanted it done that day or not, it’s also weird to me that you can’t “request” a different doctor or a specific doctor.

you can say no

They usually ask which I prefer. Although oddly enough, the male doctor I go to now for my paps is SO much more gentle.

No that’s not okay! I had a similar experience yesterday and he was so rough during my transvaginal ultrasound, I was in pain and he was clearly rushing. I didn’t enjoy it. Luckily for me it was only because my regular ob/gyn was unavailable and I’ll never see that doctor again & if I had to I would REFUSE any care 😡 you’re not being dramatic, experiences like that are traumatic.

You always have the right to refuse. As long as the test gets run that’s all that should matter. You should have been given the option to rebook or have the test done with your own doctor and forward the results. Sorry that happened to you.

That’s odd, no matter if my doc was male I was always given the option for a female for a pap. Personally I don’t care but I have been through birth and cervical cancer so I’m used to a bunch of random people down there. However if it makes you uncomfortable you can always refuse, they cannot make you.
