Pros and cons of IUD?

I’m considering getting an IUD but also it makes me nervous and queasy thinking about getting something placed inside me for a while. I’m on the pill right now and looking for other possible options. What are the pros and cons of IUDs? What was the placement experience like?

Irregular bleeding is the most common side effect with all iuds for the first 6 months. Even on hormonal iuds women continue to get periods and it can be irregular lengths of time bit most likely lessened flow. That said I have mirena and my naturally heavy periods stopped after month 4 and I love it. I've had it 9 months. No condoms or pull out and no babies. No pills, no pharmacy. My only side effect was 2 weeks of bad cramps. Insertion was intense cramps. I used a heating pad for the bad cramps I had. I love my IUD.

I have had two experiences with IUDs, one personal and one vicarious. I had mine inserted in 2013 and then I went with a friend to have hers inserted in 2016-17. Here’s mine:
I had my Mirena removed in February 2018 and overall my experience with it was good. I lived in a rural area at the time so it was a simpler procedure. My doctor asked if I had any questions, I didn’t, so he went through the process. It’s a bit uncomfortable but it’s five minutes max. They have to use clamps to move the cervix aside, so there’s some minor cramping like really light period cramps. They place it in and then snip the strings. At first they’re more rigid. You won’t be able to feel them but your partner might. The strings soften and curl up over time though! 
I had lighter periods over the length of my Mirena, but my periods didn’t almost completely stop until July 2017, so half a year before it was time to take it out. I enjoyed the relief of bad symptoms I used to get like terrible stomach and back cramps, and I did not like the pill when I was in high school because it messed up my flow by making it more... brownish and strange is the least gross way to describe it. Mirena almost didn’t feel like having BC at all, as the hormones are mostly dispersed into the uterus to make the walls thinner (why period lessens over time). I’m not sure about non hormonal IUDs.
It’s also worth noting that I’ve had mine out for about a year and my periods haven’t hit full swing but they have gradually increased since then. My symptoms have never been as bad as they were when I was younger and before I had Mirena so I really like that.
With my friend we were in a more health accessible place so we went to a teaching hospital. Lots of doctors and students and there was a camera. It was really cool. I had also had it for a while so I was able to ask lots of questions and they can be very informative if you know what to ask. I didn’t for a long time. I’m not sure how she likes it but I haven’t heard complaints!
As far as the having it in a long time, be sure to ask them about it so you can feel more secure because they know best! But I had no problems and most people don’t. Removal is a bit uncomfortable but no worse than insertion and you’ll receive a liner or pad for some bleeding from all the jostling around but it was a good experience on my end. Con- mine actually perforated and was free floating as my dr didn’t know, for a year. It is very rare but it can cause major fertility issues, so know that going in. I likely had scar tissue which made placement more difficult, but it’s still always a risk. 
It also cause heavy weight gain for me.

When I first got it I had cramps for about a month but I don’t get them now
Getting it out in, wasn’t painful for me. It was just A bit crampy. Afterward when the normal period cramps came in, I just laid in bed and watched tv. Something my doctor told me before she began to put it in. Was it’s 5 minuets of cramps for 5 years of worry free birth control. I love having an iud so I don’t have to worry about time zones and the pill and all the did I take it/ did I bring it with me. My boyfriend love that I have the iud. He says I’m far less moody and my anxiety leveled out. But an iud isn’t always great for everyone. Good luck with your decision! Getting mine was one of the best choices I could have made
