Genetic Testing?

I wanted to do the first trimester testing (blood work and NT Scan). But I can't get my insurance commit to quote me on the cost. I've heard horror stories of people ending up with $5K+ bills because the testing wasn't medically necessary. I'm 31. If I don't get it, I'm terrified something will actually be wrong. What are the actual chances of baby having a chromosomal disorder?? Can I skip this testing without feeling guilty??

My Dr office said if insurance doesn’t cover it they have a contract with the company and it’s a flat fee of $200, maybe yours offers the same? My best friend also found an outside company that charged around $300 for the test. This might be too much for you but may be something to look into if you really want it.

With my other 3 pregnancies I never got the testing and opting out on this pregnancy as well.  My doctor said it has a high false positive rate and then the amniocentesis is required, which I believe has a very low percentage of miscarriage. For me that low percent of miscarriage  and worrying the whole nine months that something is wrong with my baby and baby comes out perfectly fine, is not worth the head ache.

Most insurances cover the quad screen which is routine. They favor it over a NIPT because it is just as reliable. The only difference is you won’t find out the gender. If you don’t have a family history of chromosomal abnormalities then I wouldn’t worry. I personally don’t worry either way. Also your insurance can’t give you a quote if they won’t cover it. You need to talk to the doctors office.

Its less than a 1% chance of chromosomal disorder. And there is a 2nd test at 20 weeks called the anatomy scan that is far superior and way less likely to give you false positives.

They will do another when you are in the second trimester, it is called something different but they still look for abnormalities. You will be fine if you skip this one. I had never heard of the first trimester test with my son and just had the second one done around 20w.
