Can periods prematurely stop completely?
This isn’t a personal question so don’t worry about that.
I’m currently attempting to read the book “The Color Purple” and I’m really confused by this one section it the book and I’m hoping someone could help explain.
For background, the story takes place in rural Georgia back around the 1920s I believe and the main character, Celie, is a poor, black, young woman around age 14, and has already had 2 children. The children were the result of constant sexual abuse from her stepfather.
With that in mind, I believe this is from her 5th letter in the book: “But me, never again. A girl at church say you git big if you bleed every month. I don't bleed no more.”
Now maybe you can see my confusion? She’s clearly talking about her period here, I understand that, but I don’t understand how it just stops at such a young age.
And no she’s not pregnant again. The book makes it clear she simply can’t have kids anymore but doesn’t make it clear why.
So I’m wondering if I’m missing something here? Could it be her constant abuse somehow caused it? Or some other reason?
(I apologize because this isn’t quite exactly the kinds of questions that people ask here but I’m really confused and google wasn’t much help)
