Dilating???

I was wondering does your midwife check your dilation after 38 weeks or do you have to ask it to be checked?

I think it's an American thing, they're always having their parts checked on this forum and others. Don't do it in the UK until you're in labour. Can introduce infection and there's really no need to just... Check? I don't really get why they have it done when they're like 37 / 38 weeks or what have you 🤷‍♀️

The won’t check unless you are in labour generally, it can increase risk of infection. My midwife never checked but said I was 1cm when she gave me a sweep at 39 weeks. I was only checked twice when in labour too, they don’t do it more than once every four hours.

I’m in Canada and have been checked from 30 weeks on for all three pregnancies. For my first, wasn’t dilated at all at my 38 weeks check and real painful labor did all the way at 38+5. For my second, I was 7 cm dilated at 37 weeks and got sent home because it was still Braxton Hicks. My daughter was born really quickly without any pain at all at 38+2. So I guess there really is no use in checking it... doesn’t indicate baby will come out any sooner or later.
