Who keeps the pet? (Read first)

Say you and your SO are splitting up, you’re moving out- he had bought the pet but it was a gift to you. The pet thinks you’re their mother. You have primarily took care of them but he has primarily spent money on necessities for them. You both would have shelter and be financially able to provide for the pet when separated. Who takes the pet?

I clicked you but if you've shared the pet long enough, it's only fair that you share custody of the pet as well since even pets can get separation anxiety and miss the other human parent.

Don’t get pets unless you’re married. I’ve suggested this time and time again. People don’t realize that a pet is like a child! This is a tough one...you may have to share the dog or else one person is going to have to give in. 😢

When me and my boyfriend (we got back together) split I took our dog. He paid for her- but I offered to pay for her. I took her because she would have literally died from missing me. She was my baby. So when it come to that- it really just depends. If she is equally attached to both of you then maybe ask to see the pup sometimes but all in all his name is on the paperwork

If it was bought as a gift for you. It’s rightfully yours. If he doesn’t agree, take everything you’ve ever bought him!

This tells me that his only investment was actually purchasing the dog. If he feels cheated from that, I would offer to pay him back the money he spent getting the dog.

I think him because you're the one moving out and that's stressful enough, but this dog was a gift from your ex. Thats a relationship reminder and what if the dog doesn't take to your next partner? My experience with dogs have taugh me they usually only like certain men when they've been raised around just one guy. I dont think I'm explaining it correctly, but I think your own emotional health would benefit from adopting a new pet without ties to your ex who is an ex for a reason.

I think it depends on who the dog is more connected to, I have two dogs and we had spoken about this once and said if anything had ever happened he would of kept the husky as she is extremely attached to him and our maremma doesn’t really listen to anyone but me so I would keep him.

Doesn’t matter who bought it or legally owns it. Whoever the dog is most attached to gets to keep the dog.

The pet was a gift to you. You keep it. My ex bought me a puppy, nearly 10 years later I still have the dog but he is long gone
