I have that same issue. Ever since Snapchat filters came out my self esteem has plummeted. It sets such unrealistic expectations for myself. 
Try watching Sorelle Amore in YouTube
Saw a few videos from her that I found really interesting. Specially about photos, how to look good in them, along with tips of lighting and angles. 
Honestly lighting is soo important!
Also a YouTuber called Glam and Gore (incredible makeup) made a video once about it. Believe it was a series of how to get started in such a field. Really good tips as she got her start mainly from doing 100 days of makeup on her instagram.
