Talk to your doctor about it first. You’re going to get a lot of ugly opinions on here. 
I used castor oil with my last in 2016 with the okay from the doctor and his specific instructions. He’s old school and won’t use Pitocin to induce because I’ve had a bad a c-section in 2003. I did have a slow induction in 2006 with Pitocin by another OB and was in it took almost 3days. 10yrs later I was pregnant again and because of my history he said he would not be using Pitocin and because of my slow dilation with PIT he suggested trying Castor oil at home at 39wks. 
From what he told me, there is ZERO evidence that proves Castor oil causes baby to pass Meconium. Stress or long overdue cause baby to pass Meconium. Even Pitocin Can cause stress. He said horror stories are due to taking Castor oil incorrectly. He said only 2 tablespoons are needed and the tablespoons should be separated by 3-4hrs. Yes it’s going to give you the runs, after all it is a natural laxative. You just need to increase your water intake and have a couple powerades to prevent dehydration (just like with any other diarrhea). 
At 39wks I was 90% effaced and 2cm dilated.  I took one tablespoon at 12pm and followed it with a cup of OJ (it taste like liquid chapstick). At 4pm I took the second tablespoon. Around 7-8pm I started having loose stools and it lasted a good 30min. Contractions started shortly after but they were irregular and tolerable. By 10pm they were 5-8mins apart and a lot stronger so we decided to go to the hospital. I was still only dilated to 2 so they asked me to walk about for 1hr. After 30mins of waking I gave up. The contractions were intense and i was very nauseas and threw up a couple times. When we went back to triage it about 12:30a and I told the nurse I was in a lot of pain and couldn’t walk anymore. She came in around 1a to check my dilation and was at 8.5cm. She was shocked at how quickly I went from 2 to 8. They got orders from my doctor to start and IV and get me prepped for labor, but before they could even start my IV my water broke and pressure started. They wheeled me into a labor room quick and doc told me to start pushing. She was here in less than 10mins of me pushing. She was 100% healthy, weighed 6lb 7oz. Castor oil was a success for me , but because my body was ready and my doctor and I get it was a better alternative than using Pitocin that could put me in another long labor and potentially stress the baby. I don’t think I would have used Castor oil if he wasn’t comfortable with it, but because he was confident so was it.

No, definitely not if the baby's not ready. My sister did and ended up having a C-section because the baby wouldn't come. Our mom was visiting her and she wanted to have the baby before my mom left. Best to wait for the baby's timing.
