I need help!!!

I have an irregular period I had brown spotting on January 31st and haven't had my period for February not stressed have been having sex and not on birthcontrol. When do I test ?(brown spotting was just a few drops and I thought my period was coming but never showed and I've never had brown spotting before help please?? What could the spotting mean??
