Is sex with a ex generally a good idea? I get  that it depends oh how u ended things but like in an overall thought is it bad or good.

Depends. I had an ex that I began dating when I was 17 and he was 23 & had a 2 year old son (parents knew and I had a job and was responsible). He broke up with me in January 2016, a month before I turned 18. 
Fast forward, he contacted me a year later in May. We started seeing each other so I could see his son because "he's missed you soooooo much". After about 3 visits, we began disc golfing together again. One day afterwards, we had sex in the back of my truck... After that, he said we'd have to actually be in a relationship in order for me to see his son because "he's not gonna confuse him like that". And it's not like we kissed or held hands like we did when we dated in front of him....
So as I said, it definitely depends....

I wouldn’t say it’s bad, it just depends on the dynamic of your relationship. I’ve done it, but every time for me it ended with confusion. They’d act like we were dating again even though we were only hooking up. It definitely feels like you’re starting to get back together if you aren’t careful to make it very clear what you’re looking for. I guess just be prepared for feelings to come back and that type of thing.
