Do I really need baby detergent?

No, it’s basically clear and free with a “baby” mark up.. I would just use what you normally use unless you see a skin reaction.. then just switch to free and clear

I would use baby detergent. All my kids had sensitive skin so regular detergent irritated them

You do not have to use baby detergent. I prefer to because I love the smell but I use the All brand as it's not as fragrant as the dreft is. I feel dreft has a stronger smell. I wash every thing initially in the baby detergent then we switch to all free and clear which is what we use in our house any ways. 
I absolutely recommend washing every thing first especially new and used items (unless its stuff from a previous pregnancy that you know is cleaned by you type of deal). New items can have so many chemicals on them and when getting used you have no idea what they have been in contact with. 
Do what is best for you. Babies skin is sensitive. Watch for any skin irritations of course and be mindful that they can get an allergy at any time to all kinds of things (this goes for any human at any time). Just because they didnt start with an allergy there is always a chance to develop one eventually. 😊

At first I would only wash my sons clothes with the baby detergent but one day I was lazy and decided to wash his clothes with mine using regular detergent and he was fine so now I just always wash his clothes with mine. We have never had any problems.

No it's a scam I swear. Just use hypoallergenic or dye free. The "free and clear" ones clean just as well as colored and scented

Mu husband has sensitive skin and i have a lot of allergies.  So we used baby all and then after the first year we used all free and clear. Its less expensive than dreft. But smelled nice.

we used the smelly purple cheaper stuff 😂 and baby was fine with it. 
we ended switching to Tide pods because we got a HE washer and dryer.
