My now husband and I were on and off for probably 2 years. Whenever we decided to grow the hell up. We were fine. We rarely argue. We have conversations if theres a problem. 
But both of the people involved have to get their lifes figured out and get everything straight. For it to work out with anyone for that matter. And that may mean a lot of time apart for that to happen. Thats just my opinion and story on the subject.

It depends if there is real love involved and sometimes if they move on they could come back

From what I've seen if someone leaves it gets easier to leave again then breaks get longer and eventually the relationship fizzles out. I'm sure there are some couples that work out but it usually doesn't bode well for the future of a relationship when people leave instead of working it out as a team.
