Did you stick to the nicu feeding times?

Our boy was fed every 3 hours round the clock in the NICU. We still feed him every 3 hours but his times have fluctuated by 30 minutes or an hour....is this ok? Should we keep him on a stricter schedule or is that not too drastic of a change? I feel kind of guilty not sticking to the schedule but sometimes he wont eat or wants more and it pushes it back.

That is totally fine. We stuck to the schedule as much as possible but you have to be flexible. Like, when he wanted more before the 3 hours was up then we would just start the next feeding 3 hours from that one. If he does not want to eat when the 3 hours is up, then try giving him a little more in the next bottle if he goes a little later.

I would stick to the 3 hours as mu h as you can. Of course, if the baby is acting hungry and wont take a paci or redirect his attention, feed before then. The schedule helps SO MUCH if you plan on going out, doing daycare eventually... etc. Knowing around when baby will be hungry again makes the difficult thing that is motherhood so much easier.

I just fed in demand once we got home. Most of the time we wanted to eat more frequently, usually every 1.5-2 hours before she turned 1 month old. She’s now 4 months old and still eats every 1.5 hours during the day and sleeps great most nights. 4 nights in a row has slept more than 8 hours without waking to eat, and past 2 nights has been more than 9.5 hours. I just let her do her thing and let her eat and sleep whenever she wants. It’s worked out pretty well for us thankfully.

We tried to stick to the every 3 hours schedule but we would get to two hours and he was so fussy. I took him for a check up at his pediatrician and he told us to feed him if he’s hungry and not worry so much about a strict regimen. That’s exactly what stopped his fussy behavior immediately- my little guy just wanted to be fed.

We tried to stick to their schedule but I eventually just left him sleep off he was sleeping m. That helped me feel human again too. Be close but allow wiggle room
