my IUD experience

Rachael

im gonna start this by saying that this is superr long and i know that not everyone has the experience i’ve had with the IUD, but i also know that before i got it i was looking for experiences from other girls who’d gotten it.

i got the mirena IUD in june of 2018 because i was HORRIBLE about taking my birth control pill and so i was a) not protected and b) constantly spotting. i thought it was a great idea!!! so i went in and had it inserted, and the pain was how everyone said it would be: pretty bad. i’d give it probably a 8/10. after i had it inserted i had horrible cramps and very heavy bleeding for about 48 hours. my gynecologist told me i should probably expect bleeding for the first month after i got it put in, which was understandable. after about the 3rd month of continuous light bleeding i started doing more research that said i could bleed for up to 6 months after insertion. so fast forward to about november; i was still bleeding constantly and i was having a A LOT of pain in my lower abdomen. i went to so many doctors trying to figure out if it was my kidneys, intestines, etc. but nothing was wrong. fast forward again to the end of january and i was still bleeding, and by this point i was so over it. my gynecologist put me on a birth control pill along with the IUD to try and regulate the bleeding. it worked for the first two weeks but then i started bleeding again. i decided this definitely wasn’t the birth control option for me. i went to my gynecologist this past week to get my IUD removed, which i’ve read and heard is supposed to be a low pain experience. during my pelvic exam, my gynecologist couldn’t find the strings of my IUD. they did an ultrasound to make sure it hadn’t fallen out and it’s still in there. now, i have to be put under anesthesia in april so they can removed the IUD with a scope.

if you’ve read this far you’re obviously like me and really want to research about the IUD. honestly, this isn’t to scare you away from it because i know it would be great for some people! but my best advice is to make sure you understand that things may not go as planned and there definitely are complications. also make sure and talk to your doctor about all of your birth control options to figure out what’s right for you!!
