Do you call your husband’s siblings’ children your nieces/nephews?

My husband doesn’t consider my nieces and nephews his because they range in age from 8-26 (my husband is 24, I am 28). They were all born before he and I even knew each other, so I kind of get that.

Now his brother and SIL are adopting a 5-year-old little girl. Would she be considered my niece or just his?

My mom would always refer to my dad’s nieces and nephews and just his, but there was also an estranged family dynamic there.

Any child your siblings have or your husbands siblings have is considered both your nieces and nephews. It doesnt matter when they were born.

I personally never feel any kind of connection with other’s children so it’s hard for me to call my SIL’s son my nephew. I always say my husband’s nephew

I would think that all of your siblings kids are his nieces and nephews too? However I can see both sides of it. I’m 21 and my husband has an 19 year old niece, its rather strange to call her my niece. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I would consider her a niece but with the ones older I understand why he wouldn't call them niece or nephew mostly because if I were 26 I wouldn't want a 24 year old to call me his niece, it would be weird.

We joke about that a lot haha. I became an aunt when I was 2 because my oldest brother is 19 years older than me. I actually have a nephew and 2 nieces older than my husband. He knows that the are family, but he just tells people they are my nieces and nephews. Sometimes he will call my 8-year-old nephew his just because he is the one we see the most, and my nephew adores my husband.

I consider my husband's sister's kids my niece and nephew and they were born before we met. 🤷‍♀️

Honestly it really depends on our siblings and our step siblings on which ones we are comfortable with. We've been together for about 1/2 of them before they entered the world. For us regardless they are family and they are all loved for their unique self.

My husband calls my 21 year old niece his niece? She is. My husband is 27. My brothers and sisters are much older than me so that’s how that works out. I’m not a lot older than her either. He calls all my nieces and nephews his.

Of course they are my niece/nephew.. do you have aunts and uncles? If they are married, don’t you call their spouse your aunt/uncle?
