BC day 1

So I started bc yesterday for the first time. I started it it on my first day of my period, which was yesterday. I’m still bleeding is that normal? I mean it’s not as heavy as it wild usually but I’m still confused because I thought taking the pill on day one would make your period go away??? Am I wrong or whattt????
