Its not that it helps you get pregnant but any woman of childbearing age should be consuming Folate. I say folate because its the natural form of synthetic folic acid and if you have a mthfr gene mutation (35% of us do) you shouldnt be taking folic acid, your body cant properly break it down and it can cause a lot of issues. I wish dr’s informed their patients more on this. Taking folate during pregnancy helps to prevent spina bifida and other defects that a baby can be born with. Even while not pregnant, I take a multivitamin w folate (ritual.. ritual.com are the vitamins i take)

It is vital for a growing baby's brain and neural tube development so that is why it's so important to start taking it before you get pregnant because the first few weeks of the baby's development is very important to have enough folic acid for the neural tube to develop properly.

This is because the neural tube starts to develop very early in pregnancy and folic acid is essential even in the early stages before a women knows she is pregnant.
