I don’t think they make up stories. Like sandy hook being a hoax as an agenda for gun control supporters or something. 
I will say propaganda, media “brainwashing” for lack of a better term, or even as others have stated, shifting focus onto things considerably “less important” is very real, which is why it’s important to have multiple news sources

There is and has always been spin. 
However, the current administration in the US is something else entirely. Jane Mayer’s piece in the New Yorker called “The Making of the Fox News White House” gives one a lot to think about.

Absolutely. I've worked for the government for 16 years and my husband for 18 years. I have family in the pentagon, he has family in DHS, 95% of our collective family has served in the military. Ask how many military members trust our government. The answer might shock people. Many of us don't do it to obey the government, but to protect the people we love from the government that WILL one day betray us.

For this reason I don’t let my
Son watch the news or live tv unless it’s educational. I keep him more on Netflix. 
Media is brainwashing from politics - models that are plastic. 
Gotta keep him and other children in the books and learn history because it repeats itself.

I think it comes down to--- do we think the government is telling news media what to focus on? 
News is not news anymore, it's entertainment and only concerned with ratings, not disseminating the news we need to know.
That is why it's so important to get informed by multiple sources, so you get more balanced info.
