Look at the instructions on what you bought, they give a recommendation. I have a 26 day period and they recommend starting to test on CD8, I usually catch the surge between CD 11 and CD 14.

The whole point of opks is to find out when you ovulate, so if you know you're ovulating in a few days then you don't need to take an opk test
