You are confusing our fertile window with ovulation.
Ovulation is an even that takes about 15 minutes, and the egg survives around 10 hours  after ovulation.
Since sperm will stay alive inside you for about5 days, with the ability to fertilize your egg for the first 3 days after ejaculation, and it is not normally possible to pinpoint ovulation exactly. That is why we use the fertile week. It allows for some variance. Your fertile week will normally end the day after ovulation, and it starts about 5 days before the day you ovulate. So 5 days before + ovulation day + the day after = 7 days.
DPO starts to count from ovulation.
Here are some more interesting facts:
* You were born with the egg that releases when you ovulated.
* That egg started to mature about 90 days before ovulation, together with around 9 other eggs. All the other eggs will just die, while this egg will be released.
* This process will happen every day of your fertile life. On non-ovulation days, the 10 eggs that started to mature 90 days ago will all die. This is the reason why we get less and less fertile as we get older.
