Godmother for non religious families?

Hi ladies, I’d love to hear opinions from both religious and non religious moms. Me and my SO are far away from being religious and we were not going to baptize a kid, but both of us grew up in fairly religious families where there was always a godmother and godfather. And this is the part I actually really liked, so I was wondering can I just name my best friend godmother to my child?

I know it sounds weird, but we don’t have much family around and having another person as a ‘nominated’ family member sounds kinda warm. And I know my friend will do great job cause she loves kids and for sure will be great for this role. That’s mainly because I don’t want her to be just moms friend, but something closer, since we’ve been through some shit together lol and I consider her almost my sister.
