Ring size??

I want to get a promise ring my my boyfriend on our anniversary and want to plan this huge thing for it. But I don’t know how to get his ring size without him figuring it out

Measure his finger with a strip of paper while he’s sleeping then put it up to a tape measure and do the math (google will help with that) or buy a few rings from Walmart or amazon that are cheap but typical men’s size like 8,9,10,11. Then be like ugh I bought these cute rings and they’re all too big for me like seriously!! “See if they fit you” just like make a joke about it and stuff. I feel like guys typically don’t expect promise rings so I don’t think he’d be suspicious. Guys can also be super oblivious to that kinda stuff lol.

It’s usually equivalent to shoe size. This is accurate for both me and my husband. Not 100% but close for guessing.

Does he wear rings? If he doesn’t then that may not be the best option. If he does then “steal” one of those rings and get it sized
