Did the pros of pain meds while pregnant outweigh the risks for anyone?
I KNOW it's not common, but it does happen sometimes; the need for pain relief during pregnancy outweighs the potential cons & doctors allow pregnant patients to continue taking their pain meds.
I have a prescription for oxycodone 5mg 1-4 times a day for chronic pain that I have from Arthritis, Sjogren's Syndrome & Fructose Malabsorption. The pain literally makes me crumble to the floor. It affects my daily activities including work.
I just found out I'm pregnant & I'm terrified of not having pain relief & it hurting the baby as well as myself. My last pregnancy ended in miscarriage after 3 months & I was told to stop taking my meds. I didn't fight it because I figured I'd be okay & I was wrong, was in intense pain & discomfort for all 3 months, plus withdrawal from meds was terrible while pregnant.
Looking up research, there aren't many studies on use of oxy during pregnancy, the only potential risk was fetal withdrawal at birth. But with my last pregnancy that was a risk with my IBS medication (amitriptyline) & all the dr said I had to do was stop taking it the 9th month & it wouldn't be an issue for the baby. I'm wondering if it's the same with oxy/certain opioids?
Have any mommas had the pros outweigh the cons & used Rx opioids during pregnancy? Did everything go okay? I'm doing everything I can to keep this baby safe like not drinking any alcohol, not smoking cigarettes, limiting caffeine, etc. But those things are luxuries, my medication is a necessity. I'm definitely going to talk to my drs about it, but I was curious about moms that were able to keep taking their meds & what the outcome was. If my pain wasn't so unbearable, I wouldn't even be asking.
