How LH surges work. (If taking daily ovulation test how it will appear to you). 
Cd1: period has arrived! Your OPK will appear strong as if almost positive but not quite there. 
Cd2-9: will start darker but not positive and gets lighter each day. 
Cd10-14: you are getting close to ovulation so you will see the OPK gets faint (usually starts to get faint just the start of fertile window).
Cd14-18: (or later if you ovulate that late) you will start to see it get darker again till the point of ovulation and “peak”. 
Cd19: after ovulation it will start to get light again. 
Cd28-33: as period approaches it will start to darken again but not be positive. 
Here’s the catch: you can also get a positive OPK if you are pregnant. If you have a high enough HCG to detect on a HPT then an OPK will appear positive as well. So if you take an ovulation test and it is a blazing positive but you know there is no way in heck you are ovulating then take a pregnancy test.

LH is an indicator that you will ovulate. Usually 2 weeks before your period. It is a spike, so it will rise then come back down.
