Speak to another dr or LC, there are very very few cases where formula is truly needed. Mainly Drs aren’t BF experts and don’t understand that BF babies gain weight differently, I would strongly advise against introducing formula just supplement with your expressed milk, nurse as often as possible (do not have a schedule) and see how you go

It might be just to help baby gain weight. I had enough milk pumped but he didnt gain enough from it. So we supplemented.

If his weight gain is low, you can always try supplementing with bottles of pumped milk instead of formula. I did that in the first couple of weeks after my son was born. They wanted him supplemented due to his jaundice, but they were fine with supplementing breast milk. They just wanted to make sure he was getting enough. And if there’s a concern over the fat content of your milk, you can add a teaspoon of formula into each bottle of milk. That suggestion came from my sister, who is a dietician at a children’s hospital. That way you get the extra calories and nutrients, but you’re still getting all those wonderful breastfeeding benefits.

Your milk just might not be fatty enough. This happened to me right after my daughters 1st birthday. I was about 2 months pregnant and my supply dropped way low and the quality was terrible and the dr suggested introducing whole milk (since she was a year) and using up any pumped freezer milk since that was pre pregnancy. My daughter had only gained 10 Oz in 3 months. Once I stopped breastfeeding and giving her the freezer milk and then whole milk she gained 2 pounds and like 4 Oz in a month! The dr may just want to supplement until baby gets enough weight gain but I would continue to breastfeed plus formula if you want to continue on your BF journey. Good luck mama, I know BFing is hard
