Teachers calling their student nick names

Was curious to hear opinions on teachers using harmless nick names for students such as honey, sweetie, babe. Now I want to say these nick name uses is harmless and not directed at ones specific student. When I worked at a school there was a teacher who commonly used these nick names when talking to her students, this was just the way she talked. She also would say this when talking to coworkers and called me honey many times I was never offended by this.

One day she called one of her students babe I was there and if I remember correctly she said “thank you babe” when he turned in his homework something she said commonly. The students parent did come in to the school and was furious and yelled at her saying she is being inappropriate. Do you think she crossed a inappropriate line without realizing it? Or did the student’s parent overreact?

If it matters these are elementary school students
