Wash hair - toddler freaks out. Any tips?

My LO is 18 months and HATES washing his hair. We do it twice a week and he hates the water being poured over his head and now he knows it’s coming so will start crying and yelling before and pushing out hands away and tonight he cried for so long even after. Last time he moved so much to get away that he ended up swallowing and choking on the water he took in🤦🏻‍♀️ 😫 
Help! It’s only getting worse 😰😰😰
Tried wash cloths and trickling water which is ok for wetting and shampooing but I can’t clean out all the shampoo.

So a girl I nannied a few years ago had this issue. She literally screamed bloody murder when it came to shampooing and rinsing, the rest of the bath was fine. She did it with her parents too (the mom literally wouldn’t even bathe her anymore and would hand it off to the dad or myself). I finally brought a Barbie doll in the bath with her, we’d rinse both her and the dolls hair, then I’d wash the dolls hair, rinse it, while having the girl help me, and after a couple weeks, because she felt like she was helping, if finally calmed down. She was about 18 months - 2 years st the time.

Try taking a shower with him and make it a game going under the shower head count to three and tell him ready set go...I have the opposite problem all my kids have loved the water and my 2 year will put so much shampoo on his hair 🤦🏽‍♀️

We just get really excited after doing it and he eventually got used to it ad doesnt dread it anymore

Could you drain all but a few inches of water from the tub then get him to lay down so you could rinse it out with his head just partway submerged instead of pouring water? Maybe get in the bath with him where he could lay on your lap or something?

Taking swim classes has helped fix this problem for us. Now i can pour water over his face and he just holds his breath.

Have you tried one of those flower looking head things for the water? Sorry im not sure what its called! My daughter went through the same thing as she was beginning to learn independence, stick with it and it will pass. For awhile i just barely washed her hair and it was pretty touch and go.. Now she doesn't mind but still doesn't like it if water gets on her face so perhaps thats just his issue.

My daughter hates it too but all I do to help is use to show head instead of a cup or something so it’s over fast and I use as little soap as possible for her super long hair

You could try put a wash cloth on his forehead. But I made it a game with my son. That I count to 3 and pour the water out.  I also let him play with the cut.

Put something cool that he likes on the ceiling and have him look up and focus on that ? Like a sticker of his favorite character? Or get a detachable shower head that you can quickly spray the shampoo out?
