Baby Walkers: Are they good or bad for baby?

FTM here - wanted to know thoughts and experiences with baby walkers.

Here’s the deal: don’t leave your kid in one for extended periods of time and supervise them. They’re banned in other countries because people wouldn’t be paying attention and babies would end up down a flight of stairs or other preventable safety related issues. It comes down to supervising your child. My child used hers in safe environments under my supervision for no more than 30 minutes at a time, she’s perfectly fine. We actually used alllllll the baby gadgets (Bumbo seat, Jumperoo, walker, etc). I supervised my child and limited her time in these things. If you can handle that, I think it’s fine.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that the US ban them, like Canada did. So I won’t be buying one for my son. They are unsafe and bad for development.

I’ve heard they were bad. A lot of studies show that they prevent a child from learning to walk as quickly because the walker is so much easier than actual walking amount other things. They also say it’s a safety risk if you have stairs. I didn’t know about any of this until my son had been using his walker for a few months though. It was the ONLY thing that he would sit in for more than 3 minutes so I could get things done. He ended up taking his first steps the day he turned 10 months and was practically running by 11 months.

I had one with my first two daughters, but both flipped over the side of it so I tossed it. I thought it was a fluke thing when it happened with my first daughter and then the same thing happened with my second daughter. They’re pretty dangerous and are banned in many other countries. My daughters loved it, but I will not be purchasing another one for my son. My twin cousins spent so much time in theirs they needed physical therapy to correct the “tippy toe” walk. I honestly wouldn’t bother getting one. There really aren’t any benefits to them and there a lot of other safer baby products on the market.

Coming from an infant/toddler teacher's stand Point they delay walking. The more time they spend in them, the more delayed or at risk they become.

Our nurse told us that they cause delays for the child. I was considering getting one for our LO but not anymore.

We had this one from Fisher Price and it was amazing! It never tipped over and it definitely helped to give my son confidence to walk. He loved it. I’ve also heard the Vtech one is good. The only ones that aren’t recommended are the kind that confine your baby where you actually have to put them into the walker. Any type of walker where they freely stand behind and push, like this Fisher Price one, is great because they can grab onto it and use it whenever they want, or they can let go and crawl away if they decide they don’t want to stand or walk anymore. My mom had a wooden one at her house that worked well too.
