Have you had a water birth?

Question

My doctor asked me today if I’ve considered a water birth. Until now I haven’t even thought about it. Have you had one? What are some pros and cons?

Answer

Yes, twice. Laboring in the water definitely provides pain relief. Actually delivering in the water is supposed to help soften the tissues and maybe decrease tearing, but that hasn't been true for me. The main attraction to water birth is that you don't have to move during transition, you can just stay where you are. It is also easier to squat in the water. 
The downside is that it may be harder for your provider to estimate how much blood you have lost if that becomes an issue. And you generally have to get out right away, and deliver your placenta in the bed. Check with your provider on their policy on this though.

I definitely plan on using the tub to help during labor. Whether or not I give birth in the tub just depends on how things are going. Sometimes if baby gets stuck on the pelvis, you need to get out to adjust things, and you might not feel like getting back in. I’m just going to go with the flow, but I love having the option!

I planned a water birth with my 1st, we started off in the pool and it definitely helped with pain relief and my waters also broke in the pool. However, I was too relaxed and it slowed my contractions down! So I had to get out the pool and they gave me a drip to bring the contractions on again so he ended up being born out the pool and it took a lot longer than it could have so with my 2nd I just had him in an active labor and plan on doing the same this time xxx

If I had the option for a water birth in the hospital, I would have done it. But where I live, you have to do it at home or a birthing center and we're just more comfortable in the hospital. You can find videos on YouTube to see what it's like!
