What’s the difference between sex and gender?

Question

Not sex as in sexual intercourse by the way 😅
In school the other day, my class were debating what the difference was and to be honest, I don’t know what to believe anymore 😂
What’s your opinion? Do you know what the actual difference is?
I’m just curious as to what everyone thinks.

Well this isn’t opinion, it’s fact. Sex is biological, gender is social.

There’s not much to debate. 
Sex refers to your physical characteristics. 
Gender refers to what’s in your brain. 
For example a trans woman may be biologically male. Info that’s relevant for her doctors to know, but really related to who she is as a person, or how she interacts with the world around her. Her gender would be that she’s a woman.

Sex is biological and gender is how your identity, but there are new nuances with both it's not as simple as male and female. 
Biologically, there are intersex individuals who are born with some parts of both sexes or only parts of one or they have an extra chromosome somewhere chilling out in their DNA (or some combination thereof). Many don't even know until they hit puberty if their parents don't tell them first. Scientists are starting to lean towards sex being a spectrum, due to a parts of the animal kingdom having a more fluid biological sex (Clownfish can switch sexes when needed for reproduction for example).
As for gender identity, it's a spectrum. There are people who identify as the gender assigned at birth, which is determined by sexual organs; others identify different from their assigned gender, whether that be the opposite gender, somewhere in between, or nothing at all. Some even identify as one gender one day, and a different gender the next. Some people have multiple genders (not just two) that they "move" through depending on different circumstances.

Gender is more of a social construct. I identify as female. Female is both my sex and my gender.
While others may be born with sexual organs, that they do not identify as. For example a person may be born with female sex organs but identify as a male.
In other words your sexual organs do not necessarily define your gender.

Although I do agree that sex has a biological basis while gender has a social basis...recently in one of my classes we were discussing how sex may also have a social basis because it’s not as binary as people like to think it is even on a biological level (ie people that are intersex and how hormones/genes/bodily parts are expressed across people vary bc technically we all have the same “male” or “female” parts within us) so that’s just some food for thought

Sex is what your biological sex is. I’m female so I have XX chromosomes. I have ovaries, a uterus, and all that. I identify as a woman so that’s gender. I could say I identify as non-binary or something. That’d also be a gender identity. But my sex would still be female
