Fish cruelty? 🐠

Question

I came across this article (below) about a man who’s been charged with animal abandonment and animal cruelty for leaving his pet fish in a dirty tank with no food. What are your thoughts on this? Is this legitimate or ridiculous? Is a fish different than a dog, cat, or other mammal? If so, why? What if the animal in question were an insect or spider? Discuss.
Bonus Topic: I think this article also raises questions as to why certain practices within the industrial meat industry are not considered animal cruelty. Are those practices excused because the animals are bred for consumption? Does whether or not a practice is considered cruelty depend on whether the animal is a pet (versus a wild animal or an animal marked for slaughter)? Should it?

I think it’s the same. When we buy fish, they then depend on us to have fresh water and food. If you can’t take care of pets don’t buy them. Poor fish ☹️

I think it’s legitimate. It makes me very sad to hear. I think fish are seriously mistreated by like 95% of people who have fish. Maybe more. I LOVE fish. Love them. I’d love to have an aquarium with different fish, and I’m considering doing so someday but it can’t be for a very very long time. I honestly might not even do it because I think the sourcing and selling can be unethical.

I think it's absolutely legitimate. Fish have working brains, a beating heart, they feel pain, and they deserve the same respect.
Bonus: I also don't agree with animal agriculture. Pretty much for the same reason I said above.

If you bring something home that relies on you for a safe environment and food, it is unacceptable to not provide those things. I think it's great this guy is being held responsible as many neglect/ abuse cases go severely under punished. Unfortunately, the difference between a pet and a commodity animal is the legislation helped into place by big lobby groups. This is why I choose to eat animal products raised by people I know, on farms I can visit, and that I know are dispatched humanely when it's their time (this part is another discussion though).

Fish are one of the most cruelly treated pets people own, they are all too often kept in inadequately small tanks, they are forgotten about for days or weeks at a time, if they get sick idiotic people just flush them.
Keeping fish properly is an expensive hobby
