This might be silly, but I need advice!

I need advice on putting the baby down but awake. I feel like this is silly but I have not been successful with this and she's already a month old and I don't want to create bad habits, but I fear I already have.

In the hospital all the staff told me it was "impossible" to spoil baby her first 2 weeks of life so we'd always let her fall asleep while feeding or while one of us was holding her then begin the nerve wracking task of transitioning her to her crib without waking her up. The last week I have tried putting her down drowsy but awake and she is always wide awake either crying or fussing in some way within 10 minutes.

I am a FTM and just really need some advice on this. Do I just set her down awake each time she begins to doze off until she catches on, or is there a better way to do this? What do I do when she inevitably wakes up from being startled by being in her crib after falling asleep in our arms?

Again, I feel like this is so silly but I really need help here!
