Cot bumpers, yes or no? My mum and I have very different opinions

Amy • UK 🇬🇧 Married 💍 Mummy to Emilie 👶🏻 Secondary Teacher 👩🏻‍🏫

So my mum thinks cot bumpers are dangerous, because a child could roll against one and suffocate. My argument is that if they can roll into the bumper, they can roll away from it if they’re about to suffocate and their natural instinct would be to do this. If they can’t roll away from it, then they also can’t roll into it. However, if they can roll, they need bumpers so they hit their head on cushioned material rather than the wooden spindles of the cot.

Just to clarify here, I’m not talking about a rocking crib, as I know they could roll in that. I mean the big cot that she won’t be in for the first few weeks anyway.
