Obviously the cop out, yet also realistic answer is that it has both a negative and positive impact. 
I think it has a lot of positives. For example, I genuinely think I have more ability to understand the world outside of where I live better because social media allows that all access vision. 
I just generally love Instagram 🤷‍♀️
I love watching live reactions on Twitter from people who also have the same interests as I do. Do you know how hype it gets when Beyoncé is coming? It’s a trip 😂
I love being able to read personal stories or articles written by people who’ve been through the same struggles I have. So I build a more solid understanding of my own feelings. 
But it’s just as negative. 
I have terrible self esteem. Which I have worked hard over the years to make sure I never project onto others. But people on social media constantly post the best parts of their lives (who doesn’t) but it’s hard, as a stranger looking into that profile) to not confuse that with reality. You begin thinking everyone in the world lives a better life than you in some way, and in turn, I have felt like a failure.

You also see things that you would never want to willingly see. I’ve seen ISIS videos, and in recent month, a very gruesome video of a man’s suicide attempt - which scarred me for days afterwards. 
I think for all the positives there are, you cannot ignore the negatives. And I do think social media is something parents need to take control of over their child. Children and pre-teens don’t need unlimited and unsupervised access to the internet.

Good because it allows us to communicate with people and spread ideas, opinions, and news. Bad because it allows cyberbullying and the spread negative messages/influences and is a distraction from what's going on in our immediate environments. There a couple of benefits for relationships, but the bad outweighs the good.

It's enabled people to connect with others around the world. It's allowed families to stay in touch. Small businesses to flourish and thrive. It's allowed unknown artists to get their talents out there.
On the other hand it's the biggest source for misinformation. Because of social media people have taken their own lives be it because of bullying or false accusations. There's a big thing in the UK where there have been incidents involving Jamie Bulger's murderers being 'identified' only for vigilantes to take it upon themselves to make these men's lives hell and they've ended up killing themselves because Jane is an idiot and shared with her 5000 friends that this man is one of the killers and without any proof others have shared and the cycle continues until that man no longer has a life because he's constantly harassed. 
Social media also enables pedophiles to interact with children and other pedophiles.
So whilst social media can be amazing it's not without consequences or risks.

both. it’s started businesses, allowed people to share their lives with those they love, spreads news, etc. on the other hand it leads (some) people to have a false idea of what a person’s life is truly like, and can lead to terrible body image because it’s all about angles, lighting, and sometimes photoshop. it allows for people to highlight only the best parts of their lives.

Before the internet, people still interacted using technology. Newspapers, comic books, magazines, radio, etc.
