Abnormal Ultrasound.. suspected neural tube defect?

We are heartbroken after our 10 week ultrasound to see baby may have an abnormal skull. Our doctor provided very little answers and immediately referred us to a perinatologist who we are waiting to hear from. My “unprofessional” suspicions are anencephaly. It appeared the baby has brain matter growing outside of the skull. I know this is very rare, but has anyone been through this? Here is a picture of our bean. To me I can see the “frog eyes” and where the skull ends right above the forehead. But I would love any feedback or even love and encouragement you have.

Your bean is still very small, and although I do trust the opinions of doctors, they can be wrong. My sister in law was told my niece was going to have Down syndrome, and that her heart was upside down. She was born perfectly healthy. At our anatomy scan, they pointed out several abnormalities and told us that our son may have Down Syndrome or Cystic Fibrosis and started speaking about termination. A few weeks later, everything looked fine and he looks great. I know the waiting game is worse than anything, but try to stay strong and enjoy your pregnancy! If you’re religious, pray on it, if not, just lean on your positive support system. Best of luck to you and your baby 💗💗💗

Are you able to go to a different ultrasound tech and get a second opinion? And also a different dr and also get a second opinion off them? Baby could still be forming, try not to stress too much at this stage. Maybe have another look around 12-13 weeks and see if things change.

10 weeks is awfully early for them to really be able to make such a determination. Like someone else said, at that stage they don’t really look like babies yet and are still like little gummy bears. I know it’s still nerve-wracking none-the-less. Hang in there!

10 weeks is pretty early for them to know anything with any kind of confidence. Don’t stress too much, mama.
