Before you join accounts should your S.O be debt free?

It would be nice to be debt free before getting married! But not realistic for a lot of people. Both of us have student loans, cars, and we share a mortgage all before we got married. We’re a team and we work together to get this shit paid off.

I grew up with a dad who was insanely irresponsible with money - (put my mom 30k in the hole TWICE). Like I get marriage is about trust, but if you marry someone who’s in debt that’s not like car payment related, that’s a red flag from the get go. Being financially irresponsible and married is so toxic, I would never get a joint account with someone with a history of debt.

It’s crazy to me that people keep their finances separate like separate bank account, secret money, etc. my husband and myself have been together for 8 years and we’ve always had a joint account that both of our checks get deposited into to pay all of our bills no matter if it’s his loans, my loans, we have a mortgage together but that’s about the only bill under both our names we each have our own bills but we pay them with both of our checks we don’t have “his or her” money. 🤷🏼‍♀️ what mine is yours and what’s yours is mine, because if something say happens to one of you because of that debt it affects the both of you.

We are both debt free. The only joint account we have is specifically for bills. We have our own checking and saving accounts. We split bills, so I put money in the account for what bills I’m paying for and he puts in money for what bills he’s paying for. We keep our money separate in our own accounts. 
I wouldn’t have gotten married if my partner had debt. Thankfully, he’s excellent at money management and he went to college on scholarships and didn’t have to take out student loans.
We also don’t have credit card debt because we pay our credit cards monthly and they stay paid off monthly.

Debt or no debt, I’m for no joint accounts until your married, just because at that point your finances are mingled legally no matter what bank account their in.  I could see a small account where shared living expenses can be direct debited, but that’s it.

My husband and I feel that we work as a team no matter whose debt it is.  Like mentioned,  once your married it’s technically both your responsibility.
