Infant car seat on plane?

So we will flying with my son in August who will be 7 months at the time. I’m trying to book the flight and I can’t decide it I need to pay for his own ticket and put him in a car seat or just put him in our laps. 
Also the grandparents will be buying a car seat for when we arrive at our destination.

The ONLY safe way for a child to fly is in their car seat. Don’t depend on an open seat. They also aren’t obligated to give it to you just because it’s open. 
Buy a ticket and take the car seat on the flight.

Lap children are just projectiles. If the coffee pot is secured during flight, so should children.

Check with your airline in what their policy  is. I’ll be flying with my 10 month old in July and my airline requires that she’s in a car seat even though I bought her a seat.

My daughter has flown 9 times and she’s always on my lap. I can’t afford to buy another seat and the flights are always full. Plus she gets antsy in her car seat for long periods of them. I typically wear her for security if needed.

What airline are you flying? We have flown with my daughter over 20 times on Southwest and never purchased a seat for her once, but have gotten to use her car seat and all but one flight. Since it’s open seating, if the flight isn’t full you can take the car seat out and use it anyway.
