When to take to ER

Question

Already called nurse, just waiting for the call back. But my son got his 10 week old shots and has a low grade fever, 99.5 F. If it gets higher, do I give him baby Tylenol or take to ER? Doc gave me an ok of Tylenol, just didn’t tell me when to use it so idk

This is totally normal. His body is doing what it was made to do in response to the shots. The day after his, usually at night, my son would have a 99 fever and usually just woke up the next day all better. If he’s really uncomfortable, you could do some Tylenol to bring the fever down. It’s not high at all and even when my toddler was at 102 I was told only bring him in if I couldn’t get it down with Tylenol but to expect it to last a few days.

That's not even a fever. If he seems uncomfortable or develops a fever then it's ok to give the Tylenol dosage appropriate for his weight.

This is what they told us before they gave my daughter her first shots. Our dr told us to use 1/2 the dose as soon as we left the Drs office. I was also told not to bring my daughter in unless her fever was over 101 and we couldn't get it down with Tylenol.

My baby’s got a fever of 102.9 around midnight after his first shots and cried like I had never heard him cry before. I gave him Tylenol, put a cool washcloth on his head, and held him until his fever came down about 30 minutes later. He gets sick like that every time he gets his shots so I know to be prepared for it.

Fevers are an important thing for the body - it helps fight off whatever the problem is. So if it’s a low grade fever (or in your kiddos sake, almost not even one), then I wouldn’t give Tylenol unless baby is fussy. Definitely not an ER trip.

That’s not a fever and is normal for an infant. A trip to the ER isn’t warranted.  Follow the instructions that are in the Tylenol box. The dose goes by weight and you can usually give it every 4 hours.

I would wait for the nurse to call back but, to put your mind at ease, my son just had his 6 month shots a few weeks back. He woke up the next morning with a 103 degree fever. We gave him Tylenol at their recommendation and it went down within an hour. He was fussy, by otherwise fine. I’d see what they say but, unless he is having other symptoms, Tylenol is likely the answer 😃

I’d go ahead and give it now if baby is fussy, but we were told no need for an ER trip unless it reaches 103 and doesnt go down with tylenol. 
If baby isnt too fussy, just do skin to skin and make sure they are staying fed. We usually wait until 100-101 or 99+ super fussy
