You're supposed to check on your neck not your arm. Your arm isn't the same as your face, your neck would be the closest shade.

I always go lighter if I’m in between shades because it’s less obvious. I feel like if I go to dark you can see the lines against my neck and it looks less natural. If you go lighter you could set it with a darker shade powder to even it out. Plus, I notice some makeups tend to oxidize on skin and get a tad darker when they do.
