Do you let your newborn sleep through the night or wake them for feedings?

Question

I was told to wake her at least every 4-5 hours for feedings. My MIL is old fashioned and keeps telling me to let her sleep and she will wake when hungry. Please give insight if you have any, baby girl will be 6 weeks tomorrow (Monday)

My pediatrician said if they’re back to birth weight and gaining weight they can sleep through the night

I was advised not to let baby go more than 5 hours once in a 24 hour period. Their blood sugar can drop too low if left longer than this, so it poses a SIDs risk. Different guidelines in different countries though, and we're all different in terms of what works for different people, and which bits you feel comfortable with x

My mom breast fed all 3 of us and said she always let us sleep, we were all good sleepers and would just eat like crazy in the evening before bed.
My little guy is exactly like that now! Right from birth he was sleeping 4-5 hour stretches and cluster feeding through the whole evening. He was back to his birth weight by 10 days old! 
Now he sleeps anywhere from 5-7.5 hours from 9:30 pm when he goes down and he’s almost 3 weeks old! 
If your baby is underweight then I would wake them up, otherwise let them sleep!

We've have some wight gain issues so I've been waking her every three hours to eat.
But now that the weight is there I'll let her sleep. It's usually not more than 4 hours anyway.. We just give her a bit more food at night before bed.

I let my 6 week old sleep through the night. I’ve let him since he was 3 weeks old as he was back to birth weight and still gaining. Babies need sleep just as much as eating.

I let her sleep. She’s been sleeping long stretches since about 5 weeks old. She won’t even dream feed, I usually have to pump. 😑

I let my baby sleep, but he doesn’t sleep nearly as long, he sleeps between 2 and 2-3 hours at a time 🤷🏼‍♀️ sometimes less

My doc has said that it’s really only for that first week or two so they can gain their weight back and establish feeding. We’ve always just let our kids sleep as they like though and they thrive because of it. Every baby is different obviously but if baby is continuing to grow without scheduled wake ups then I’d think your doctor would be ok with it as well.
