Does anyone know anything about underground oil tank inspections?

We’re under contract for our first home and the home inspector discovered an old line to what seemed to be an underground oil tank. The current home owners have no idea if there was ever an oil tank or if there still is because that never came up when they purchased the home 15 years ago.

So we have to pay for the test/inspection to even find out if there is one let alone if it has any leaks and then possibly for contaminated soil. (We still haven’t gotten word back from the sellers on if they will even allow us to test)

Now my husband and I are at a crossroads because if we break contract we lose $1600 but save a potential nightmare of a future expense.

But the home inspector said he thinks it’s very unlikely the tank was removed or even abandoned because the lines in the house would have been removed when they did that.

So if the test comes back we can always break contract but either way we’re out the initial money possibly more if we go through with the inspection.
