How do you politely ask why?

So this is random. My brother in law (who I'm not really close to) randomly texted me asking for my boyfriend's number. I've been with my boyfriend for 4 years and he's never asked me before. My boyfriend wants to know why he wants it before I give it to him. I don't know how to ask my brother in law why without sounding rude.

I would make a joke like “lol why are you going to ask him on a date?” Or something and he’LL kind of have to tell you why 😂
