How do they check for dilation?

Can someone explain the process of how a doctor checks your cervix? I have an appointment tomorrow morning to check to see if I’m dilated for the first time. I’ll be 39+1 tomorrow. Do they open your vag with a speculum and look? Because I’d rather not be fisted by my doctor tomorrow wrist deep in my vagina lol I feel very tight lately, even sex is painful

They put lubricant on their gloved fingers and put 2 fingers in there, it’s just pressure. It only takes a second it’s best to keep your legs relaxed as hard as that may be. But it’s really not bad. No instruments used just fingers.

My Dr does two lubed and gloved fingers. I honestly haven’t had great experiences as I have a really high and tilted cervix so checks prior to 39 weeks were uncomfortable but doable. 
Today though she was able to check and feel baby’s head and bring my cervix forward so it was easier and quick. I think w my next I might forego checks until closer to delivery since I know it’s hard to reach until later in pregnancy. Honestly nothing unbearable though and I’ve had some intense pelvic pressure/pain the last weeks (like no sex pressure/pain cuz tying was worse than any cervical check thus far)

I had one done yesterday and they used like everyone else saying a lubed up gloved hand/fingers ... it hurt me a little while he was doing it but I've always had that problem but it stopped hurting as soon he stopped it wernt hurting the whole time he was doing it though but I couldn't relax to well so that might be why lol

You can refuse it if you want. But it’s not that uncomfortable. Just two fingers so they can check to see if there’s any dilating going on. Just for reference I was high and closed and not effaced when I went into labor so dilating or not it doesn’t mean much for when labor is going to happen
