Transitioning from purée/mashed

How do you introduce bite size pieces. The only thing we have given in bite size is Puffs. I tried strawberry in the Baby led weaning stick-shape way and she just gagged HARD. 9.5 months. She went from purées to Mashed and now the chewing & pincer grasp is good to pick up smaller things but she gags ALOT and had a choking incident with banana. Too sticky it turned to a glob.

If I knew this would happen without baby led weaning I would have just started off with it, I figured we’d get away from that gagging nonsense... I don’t understand what I am doing wrong. She can chew. No teeth. But choked once in banana, and then gags on EVERYTHING except puffs or small (SMALL) pieces of toast or rice or something with some rougher texture.... Too scared to try any chunks. My kid will forever eat extremely small bite sized chunks. Pretty disappointed that she gags, and she gags hard to the point of freaking out afterwards and refuses to eat anymore. We have given up and tried again.

Sad mom, frustrated, just wAnt to feel comfortable with my baby eating not stressed out.
