One of the biggest reasons is that you aren’t a trained expert and can’t actually be certain if what you’re hearing is in fact the heartbeat. There are documented cases of women not feeling movement (after feeling it regularly) but thinking everything was fine because they thought they heard a heartbeat, only to learn the baby had in fact died. There’s no way to know if anything could have been done if they had sought medical attention sooner. 
Also, while there’s no evidence occasional use is harmful, there’s no real certainty as to whether frequent use is potentially harmful or not. 
If you do decide to use one at home, you should never rely on it for reassurance if you have other reason to suspect something might be wrong.

Doppler isn’t suppose to be used in the 1st trimester because it can cause tissue heating of the baby and the effects of that are unknown

There is also some theories/ongoing studies about Doppler's and more frequent ultrasounds being a reason for the growing numbers if babies being born with hearing loss/difficulties.

Two reasons.
 1) You may have reason to believe something is wrong but disregard those feelings/symptoms because you can still hear a heartbeat. Just because you can, doesn't mean baby is fine. You should always voice your concerns to a doctor. 
2) If you are unable to find the heartbeat you might believe baby has died, when it's much more likely you just can't find the heartbeat with your doppler.
Doppler use in and of itself is NOT harmful to you or the baby though. As long as you don't have a false sense of security or a false sense of insecurity from it, it's perfectly fine to use! 😊

Getting too many ultrasounds can cause autism. I have already had 3 so I’m only trying to get one more at 20 weeks. This is what my midwife told me and what I found online. Some doctors don’t believe it but I trust the study that was done. I guess the risk goes up only if you’ve had more than 8 during your pregnancy but why risk it? Ultrasound have only been being used for about 50 years and they don’t know how it effects the baby. And a Doppler is like a U S.

My SIL is an OB and she told me you at least shouldn’t be using it daily. I don’t think it’s exactly proven, but they believe the constant waves (or something like that) could be harmful to the baby. She also said that when you do listen, you should wait to hear the heartbeat and then stop. 
I don’t have any evidence besides what she told me, but just wanted to pass that info on!
