What is a sleep regression

What exactly happens during a 4 month sleep regression? Does it happen to every baby?

Usually at 4 months they start rolling over onto their tummy and wake up screaming during night, so that would be a 4 month thing, but sleep regressions happen every now and then during growth spirts so there isnt anything super special about it other than rolls

It’s when their sleep cycles change and become more similar to adults.. so babies need to learn how to sleep all over again. Like how we will roll over or something in our sleep but we never fully wake up and just immediately go into another sleep cycle. 
Our 4 month sleep regression was awful. She was waking every 45 minutes all night 😩

The change in sleep patterns does happen to every baby, but not all of them exhibit a pattern of waking between each cycle. You won’t know until you get there.

At 4 months their sleep cycles change from that of a baby, to what adult sleep cycles are like. Most babies go through an adjustment period, where they wake more frequently because they spend more time in lighter sleep stages

Didn’t happen with my son but my daughter had it bad. It’s generally caused by a change in their sleep cycle. Try swaddling, make sure the room is dark and just know it will pass.
