Should schools get rid of “perfect attendance” rewards/recognition?
I had the chance to re-visit my old elementary school yesterday (which was f’ing awesome) but they’ve changed a lot of their policies since I was a child there, which was interesting. One I found interesting to discuss was that they removed perfect attendance rewards and recognition.
They still take attendance, but do not reward or recognize it as they did when I was in school. Their reasoning for this was that too many parents were sending their children to school severely ill in order to earn the perfect attendance reward, which led to more children and staff getting sick, and nobody wanted to mess up their attendance or call out of work sick, so it was a vicious cycle.
They said that it did work well— at the cost of the anger of many parents, who enjoyed their child getting a perfect attendance certificate and recognition on a board at the end of the year.
Do you think it’s a good idea to get rid of perfect attendance rewards & recognition?
