NIPT testing?

Is this really necessary? My insurance only covers a small portion of it and from what I’ve seen, most of the results show extremely low odds of a defect and I’m not sure it would really matter finding it out now anyway. Any insight and opinions would be much appreciated! ❤️

It’s not necessary but I think it’s worth it. The odds of lots of things are low, but the odds of others are actually not that low. My last baby had Turner syndrome which apparently is a 1/255 chance, compared to like 1/3000+ for lots of other things. 
That said, if you go for the Nuchal Translucency (NT) scan and baby looks good, then baby is PROBABLY ok. It’s 85% accurate just with the scan and if you have the usual Down syndrome blood test it’s 90% accurate. There are other things NIPT like panorama test for. 
Just because something is rare, doesn’t mean it can’t happen to you. That’s why I do the NIPT. I actually did terminate the pregnancy with my last baby due to the condition it had (ultrasound and CVS test did confirm everything) and I would probably do it again if baby’s chances at a normal healthy life were low. Lots of people wouldn’t do that, and for those people NIPT is even less necessary (though lots of people do like to be prepared even if they wouldn’t terminate)

I had a stillborn In oct with chromosome abnormalities so it’s covered by mine even though I’m only 34 I’ve had healthy kids before that but after losing her at 23 weeks but she should of been 27 weeks we aren’t taking any chances. We are opting for gender too

In Australia NIPT is optional, costs a few hundred dollars and is not covered by private or public health. Generally most people opt for combined first trimester screening which is free and includes a blood test and ultrasound between 11 and 13 weeks pregnant. I did this with my first baby but will be doing the NIPT with this pregnancy because I'm out of the country during the timeframe for the free screens. 
I also know people who opt for the NIPT because they want to find out the gender early. It's really a personal choice :-) good luck mama!!

Due to the high cost my doctors have suggested it only if there’s any abnormalities in the 12/13 week scan and bloods.

No it's not. It's a choice. Some women don't get it for other reasons. It just shows risks to certain things. If you feel like you don't need it then don't get it.

It’s a choice but My dr recommended it because of my age (40) since I am at higher risk of genetic disorders. I wanted to also know gender as soon as possible. We did it and had results in 5 days. Unfortunately it tagged me as high risk for Trisomy 18. We did a follow up diagnostic test (CVS) and it confirmed the screening test. Baby passed away at 15 weeks from Trisomy 18 😞💜. We are pregnant again and will be doing the same test. Good luck mama!! 💜

Just went to the doctor about this, and saw a genetic counselor first to go over family history etc, based on my age my chances were low and my insurance wouldn’t cover it. I could have paid out of pocket but chose not to. In 4 weeks it’s the same test offered, covered by insurance just won’t get the option of finding out the gender. But you can also find that out at your anatomy scan which is typically 20 weeks in, can be sooner. So overall it’s a choice. I chose to wait!

No it’s not, I didn’t do any testing with my first (9years ago). I did with my son bc I was older. And I will this time around as well.
