Birth Story/Planned Induction Gone Wrong
Here to finally share my story! Although mine went completely south, the end result was my baby being born healthy! It’s kind of a long story.
I had a scheduled induction set for Wednesday May 23 at 12:00 am. That Tuesday I had plans to get things done before heading to the hospital but when I woke up i felt a big gush of water. I was wearing a pad and after seeing it soaked red/brown and clear I called my OBGYN who told me it was more than likely my waters broken and to head to the hospital.
The hospital couldn’t confirm it was my water but kept me anyway to start induction since i was scheduled hours later anyway. We started on cytotec. I did 4 doses (each dose is a 4-hour wait) and while my water broke, I only progressed to 1cm.
Good right? My OBGYN thought so, so we proceeded with Pitocin. After 4 hours I had only progressed another cm, and with the Nurses help, she stretched to a 3. I asked for the epidural since I’m not one to tolerate pain well.
After the 36 hour mark in labor i opted for a c-section when they let me know my baby was not descending at all and I hadn’t progressed passed 3cm. This was hours after epidural and hours waiting to see if I’d progress.
The epidural med had begun to wear off and I was feeling pretty strong contractions cuz of the pitocin so the anesthesiologist came by to add a stronger injection and nurse turned off pitocin. After prepping for c section, this same anesthesiologist added two more doses to make sure I was numb so we could proceed with the surgery.
All was going well until the medicine wore off completely and i could feel them working on me! At first I just felt the pressure but then I felt the stinging of the knife. I tried to tell them and they immediately gassed me, put me more medicine to fall asleep, etc. but I could still feel it even when drowsy
To add to the misery I began to hemorrhage because apparently my uterus didn’t contract after they took my baby out which resulted in lots of blood loss. I took about 3 hours in recovery where they added yet again more medicine cuz I told them i could feel the pain really badly.
My family had no idea I had blood loss since my OBGYN didn’t mention it to them, and she didn’t let me know either.. it was the anesthesiologist who stayed by my side and gave me the meds I needed, who let me know I had lost a lot of blood.
My baby had pooped already and ate very little of it, not enough for them to be concerned about. I delivered him at 11:11 and didn’t get to see him until around 3-4 am. He has been the best i could have ever imagined! He was born 8 lbs 15 oz and 20 in long. He has been breastfeeding so well even though he’s being given formula due to low blood sugar levels.
I did have to have 2 bags of blood transfusion the day after birth but I am feeling better! Recovery from a c section has been the hardest for me but I have walked around three times not even a day after delivery and I’m determined to feel better soon.
My experience was pretty traumatic given I’m a first time mom and my whole birth plan was kicked to the curb. I would do it all over again for my son though, and this experience definitely did not deter my plan for more kids in the future. I can’t wait to give my son siblings when the time is right! Thank you for reading my story!! And don’t let my induction scare you, I went in with the worst possible scenario of a high, closed cervix and a big baby to deliver!
